Darrow Leads the Way in Educating for Sustainability.

Over the past 10 years, Darrow has increased its profile as a leader in sustainability. In classrooms and as a way of life, Darrow programs have gained recognition as "leading edge" and Darrow teachers have been featured presenters at national conferences, where they have shared the School's approach to teaching and living sustainability. Some of the recognition Darrow has received have been for the following:

  • Active participant with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), including recipient of $18,000 grant for photovoltaic (solar) energy panels and presentations at state conferences
  • Clean Water Congress: Participant for past 9 years as well as host for past 3 years. Students have consistently placed in top 3 schools in this competition

In February 2005, the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) designated Darrow School as a Leading Edge Honoree in Curriculum Innovation for our integration of sustainability throughout the curriculum. Read more about Darrow's Leading Edge Award.

At Darrow - A distictive learning environment

In June 2005, the National Association of Independent Schools selected Darrow as the site of their first Sustainability Institute. Darrow's curriculum, which incorporates broad issues of sustainability, its Samson Environmental Center and Living Machine, solar panels, faculty proficiency in the topic, and overall, long-term commitment to sustainability made it a model location for independent schools to gather and study the important issues related to sustainability.
